MonaLisa Touch Q & A

What is genitourinary syndrome of menopause?

As women enter menopause, they experience changes caused by a drop in estrogen levels. One of those changes is genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), or vaginal atrophy. Vaginal atrophy occurs when vaginal walls become thinner and less elastic, and blood supply is reduced due to lowered estrogen levels.

Around half of all women with low estrogen experience these unwanted vaginal health changes. They’re most common during menopause but can also happen after childbirth, chemotherapy, surgical removal of the ovaries, or breast cancer hormone treatment.

Symptoms of GSM or vaginal atrophy include:

  • Decreased vaginal lubrication
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Slight bleeding after intercourse
  • Vaginal burning
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal dryness

Many women also experience urinary changes with low estrogen. They feel burning during urination, urinate more often, and develop frequent urinary tract infections.

What is MonaLisa Touch vaginal revitalization?

MonaLisa Touch is a fast, painless, nonsurgical treatment for the unpleasant vaginal and urinary changes caused by low estrogen. It applies laser heat to the vaginal walls, stimulating regeneration of vaginal tissue and increasing vaginal wall strength and blood supply.

Before the procedure, Dr. Delgado reviews your health history, does a complete physical exam, and assesses your symptoms. If MonaLisa Touch is right for you, Dr. Delgado does the procedure right in the office (it only takes five minutes).

Dr. Delgado inserts the probe into your vagina to painlessly deliver laser heat to the area. You can resume your regular activities immediately after the procedure, though Dr. Delgado does ask that you wait at least five days for hot baths and intense physical activity, including sex.

What kind of results can I expect from MonaLisa Touch and how long will they last?

Most women have a reduction in symptoms after just a few days and continue to improve over the following month as the collagen regeneration process continues.* As a result, you’ll experience increased vaginal elasticity, hydration, and volume.

Dr. Delgado customizes your treatment plan based on your symptoms, but most women benefit from one to three treatments over the course of a month or two. Dr. Delgado also recommends annual follow-up maintenance treatments to maintain your results.

To find out if MonaLisa Touch vaginal revitalization is right for you, schedule an appointment in the Vienna location with Dr. Delgado online or by telephone today.

What is platelet-rich plasma?

Blood contains two main components: red blood cells and plasma. Plasma contains white blood cells and platelets, which are rich in growth factors. Growth factors stimulate cell growth and promote the regeneration of tissue.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is blood that has been removed from the body and spun quickly to concentrate the platelet. PRP is then injected into different parts of the body to promote healthy skin regeneration.

What is platelet-rich plasma used to treat?

PRP has many different medicinal and cosmetic applications. Dr. Delgado primarily uses PRP for:

  • Facial rejuvenation: PRP therapy stimulates facial collagen production, increases blood supply, and smooths wrinkles and scars to restore a more youthful appearance.
  • Vaginal rejuvenation: PRP therapy combats vaginal changes caused by childbirth, menopause, or chronic health conditions. It also helps to increase natural lubrication and improve vaginal tone for greater sexual sensation and pleasure.
  • Hair loss: Growth factors in blood platelets stimulate hair follicle activity and promote new growth. PRP increases hair count and thickness.

What kind of results can I expect from platelet-rich plasma injections, and how long will they last?

Dr. Delgado offers customized treatment plans tailored to your needs. Results will vary depending on the procedure and your treatment goals.

PRP facial rejuvenation results may appear immediately after treatment and increase gradually over the months following treatment. For some women, the benefits of PRP last up to a year or more.

Some women do have instant results from PRP vaginal rejuvenation, but most begin to notice improvements over the course of several weeks. Dr. Delgado may recommend a follow-up treatment after a year to maintain the benefits of PRP vaginal rejuvenation.

With PRP therapy for hair loss, most women first notice a decrease in hair shedding, followed by new hair growth within two to three months. Dr. Delgado usually recommends several PRP therapy treatments to continue the stimulation of growth factors promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss.

Dr. Delgado is your partner in achieving greater health and wellness. She believes every woman should feel vibrant and confident at every stage of life. Innovative, nonsurgical cosmetic treatments like PRP can help you achieve that.
